# Google Analytics alternatives: the main options compared

People look for a Google Analytics alternative for privacy, for data limits, or to own their raw data. This guide compares nine tools from their vendors' own pages (Matomo, Piwik PRO, Fathom, Clicky, StatCounter, GoSquared, Woopra, Heap, HubSpot), says which need it each answers, and covers the option of keeping GA4 and exporting its raw data.

**People look for a Google Analytics alternative for one of three reasons: privacy rules, the limits of GA4’s reports, or the wish to own the raw data.** The tools below answer those needs in different ways, and no single one answers all three. This guide groups nine of them by the need they serve, describes each from its vendor’s own page, and ends with the option of keeping GA4 and taking its data out.

Every statement about a tool below comes from that vendor’s website, checked in October 2026. Vendors change their products and plans often: confirm on their pages before you decide. No prices are given.

## Which need are you solving

| Need | What to look for | Tools in this guide |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Privacy and consent | Cookieless or consent-friendly collection, EU hosting or self-hosting | Matomo, Piwik PRO, Fathom, Clicky |
| Simple, real-time traffic numbers | Live visitor view, few reports, quick setup | StatCounter, GoSquared, Clicky, Fathom |
| Journeys and product behaviour | Individual user profiles, autocapture, funnels, session replay | Woopra, Heap |
| Marketing reporting next to a CRM | Campaign and contact data in one tool | HubSpot |
| Raw data you own | Unsampled event data, export, your own storage | Matomo (self-hosted), Piwik PRO, or GA4 with its BigQuery export |

If privacy is the reason, read the legal background first: since 2023 Google Analytics can be used in the EU on the basis of the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, and what remains is consent and configuration. The details are in [Google Analytics and the GDPR](/blog/articles/google-analytics-ensure-gdpr-compliance).

## Privacy-first analytics

### Matomo

[Matomo](https://matomo.org/) presents itself as “privacy-first analytics”. What its page lists:

* **Hosting:** “on-premise or in the cloud”, with data residency and “100% data ownership”. The self-hosted version can be used without paying for a licence; the cloud version has a free trial.
* **Data:** unsampled data, raw data export, APIs and integrations.
* **Privacy:** cookieless tracking, data anonymisation, access controls and audit logs.
* **Reports beyond traffic:** funnels and flows, segmentation, A/B testing, heatmaps and session recordings.

Fits teams that want a full analytics product under their own control and can run it, or pay for the hosted version.

### Piwik PRO

[Piwik PRO](https://piwik.pro/) is an analytics suite aimed at regulated organisations. Its page names GDPR, HIPAA “and 140+ laws” among the requirements it is built to meet, and customers mention its Tag Manager and Consent Manager. On data access it says the behavioural data can be reached “via UI, API, or direct export” and streamed into BI tools or a data platform.

Fits organisations with strict compliance needs that want consent, tagging and analytics from one vendor.

### Fathom Analytics

[Fathom](https://usefathom.com/) is simple, cookieless web analytics. Its page states that Fathom “doesn’t use cookies, so no consent banner is required for your analytics” (that is the vendor’s position; check it against your own regulator’s rules), that EU traffic is routed through European-owned infrastructure, and that history is kept for as long as you are a customer. GA4 history can be imported. It is a paid service with a free trial; the old idea that it is a free tool is out of date.

Fits sites that need traffic, sources and goals, and nothing more.

### Clicky

[Clicky](https://clicky.com/) is real-time web analytics with visitor-level logs. Its page lists real-time visitor logs and actions, data “anonymized and GDPR-compliant by default”, heatmaps at page and visitor level, and bot detection, with visitors from AI chatbots reported separately.

Fits site owners who want to watch individual visits as they happen.

## Simple, real-time traffic analytics

### StatCounter

[StatCounter](https://statcounter.com/) shows a live feed of visitors as they arrive, with location, device, navigation path and visit history. Its comparison with Google Analytics names all reports in real time, session replay, individual visitor paths and visitor alerts, and it adds heatmaps. Paid plans, with a free trial.

### GoSquared

[GoSquared](https://www.gosquared.com/analytics/) positions itself as real-time website analytics “built for real-time from day one”, with numbers that update as they happen, a documented REST API, and pricing that does not charge per seat. It offers a free trial.

## Journey and product analytics

### Woopra

[Woopra](https://woopra.com/) is customer journey analytics. Its page describes tracking across product, marketing, sales and support with “50+ integrations”, reports on journeys, trends, retention and segmentation, individual people profiles in real time, and triggers that act on behaviour.

Fits teams that want to follow named users across systems, which GA4 does not do.

### Heap

[Heap](https://www.heap.io/) has “joined forces with Contentsquare”. Its page describes a single snippet that automatically captures every user interaction, session replay, and product analytics for activation and retention, used by more than 10,000 companies.

Fits product teams that want to analyse interactions they did not plan to track.

## Marketing reporting inside a CRM

### HubSpot

[HubSpot Marketing Analytics](https://www.hubspot.com/products/marketing/analytics) is part of HubSpot’s marketing platform: it measures campaign performance, site traffic and reports across channels in dashboards, next to HubSpot’s CRM. It does not replace a web analytics tool’s depth; its strength is putting marketing results next to contacts and deals.

Fits teams that already run their marketing and CRM in HubSpot.

## Or keep GA4 and own the raw data

Some of the reasons people leave GA4 are about its reports, not about the data it collects: sampling in large explorations, 14 months of event-level retention on a standard property, and no way to join other sources. Those three are answered without leaving GA4.

GA4 has a native export of raw events to BigQuery, available to standard properties. The data is unsampled, kept for as long as you keep it, and sits next to your ad spend, orders and CRM tables. The setup is in [connecting GA4 to BigQuery](/blog/articles/google-analytics-4-to-bigquery-guide), and the reporting limits it removes are described in [data sampling in GA4](/blog/articles/data-sampling-in-ga4).

[OWOX Data Marts](https://www.owox.com/app-signup) works at that point. An analyst writes the SQL that turns the export into reporting tables, saves it as a Data Mart, and marketers read the results in Google Sheets or Data Studio (the former Looker Studio). It is not an analytics tracker and does not collect website data itself: it works on what GA4, or any other tool that exports raw data, writes to your warehouse.

## How to choose

1. **Name the reason.** Privacy, report limits and data ownership lead to different tools.
2. **Check what you lose.** GA4’s integration with Google Ads, audiences and conversion modeling has no equivalent in most alternatives.
3. **Run two tools in parallel for a month.** Numbers will differ; understand why before you switch.
4. **Check the data exit.** Whichever tool you choose, confirm you can export raw data, so the next decision is not a migration from scratch.

## FAQ

## Frequently Asked Questions

How do these alternatives address GDPR compliance and user privacy concerns?

Most Google Analytics alternatives prioritize GDPR compliance by offering features like anonymized data tracking, explicit user consent options, and advanced privacy controls. These tools ensure that businesses can gather insights while adhering to strict privacy regulations.

Why would I use a Google Analytics alternative?

For one of three reasons: privacy rules that make you prefer cookieless or self-hosted analytics, the limits of GA4 reports such as sampling and retention, or the wish to own raw data. Some of those needs are also met by keeping GA4 and using its BigQuery export.

What are the key considerations when selecting a Google Analytics alternative?

Consider data collection capabilities, data security, integrations, user-friendliness, and alignment with your goals and needs.
