# 7 free UTM builders for tracking your marketing campaigns

A UTM builder assembles a tagged URL from a source, a medium and a campaign name. This guide compares seven free options, checked on each vendor's page in October 2026: four standalone builders and the three built into Meta Ads Manager, Microsoft Advertising and Google Ads, plus what to use when a team outgrows them.

**A UTM builder is a form that assembles a tagged URL from a source, a medium and a campaign name, so the syntax cannot go wrong.** Google’s Campaign URL Builder is free and enough for single links. For ads, the better builder is usually the one inside the ad platform, because it fills in campaign names for you.

This guide compares seven free options: four standalone builders and three built into ad platforms. Each was checked on its vendor’s page in October 2026. Two tools from earlier versions of this list are gone: Facebook’s Google Analytics URL builder page now returns an error, and Terminus is now a paid governance product, covered at the end.

## What a UTM builder does

A tagged URL is the page address plus parameters that tell your analytics tool where the visit came from:

```
https://www.example.com/
  ?utm_source=newsletter
  &utm_medium=email
  &utm_campaign=spring_sale
```

The builder writes that string for you: correct question mark and ampersands, no spaces, nothing missing. What it does not do is choose your values. `Email`, `email` and `e-mail` are three different mediums to Google Analytics 4, and only one of them puts the visit in the Email channel. A naming convention matters more than the tool; the rules are in the guide to [UTM tags](/blog/articles/how-to-use-utm-tags).

## The seven builders at a glance

| Builder | Type | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Google Campaign URL Builder | Web form | Single links, and Google Play links |
| OWOX UTM Builder | Spreadsheet | Many links with one naming scheme |
| Raven Tools URL Builder | Web form | Quick one-off links |
| Triggerbee Link Creator | Web form | One-off links with plain-language field help |
| Meta Ads Manager | Built into the ad | Facebook and Instagram ads |
| Microsoft Advertising auto-tagging | Built into the account | Microsoft (Bing) ads |
| Google Ads Final URL suffix | Built into the account | Google Ads, when another tool needs UTM values |

## Standalone builders

### 1\. Google Campaign URL Builder

[Google’s Campaign URL Builder](https://ga-dev-tools.google/campaign-url-builder/) has two tabs, Web and Play, and fields for the website URL, campaign ID, source, medium, name, term and content. The URL, source and medium are required, and Google notes that one of campaign name or campaign ID is required. The page explains each parameter with an example.

It builds one link at a time and keeps no history, so each link is typed from scratch.

### 2\. OWOX UTM Builder

The [OWOX UTM Builder](/guides/owox-utm-builder) is a spreadsheet, offered as a free download in exchange for a short form. A spreadsheet suits the job a web form does not: building dozens of links with the same scheme, and keeping a record of every link you created and why.

### 3\. Raven Tools URL Builder

[Raven Tools’ URL Builder](https://raventools.com/marketing-reports/google-analytics/url-builder/) is a web form with the five standard fields, campaign source, medium and name, plus optional term and content, and a generated URL to copy.

### 4\. Triggerbee Link Creator

[Triggerbee’s Link Creator](https://triggerbee.com/link-creator/) generates the tagged link as you fill in the fields, and explains what a trackable link is in plain language. It suits someone tagging a link for the first time.

## Builders inside ad platforms

For paid campaigns, the builder that matters is the one in the ad platform. It inserts real campaign names at serving time, so the value in your analytics matches the value in the ad account.

### 5\. Meta Ads Manager

In the **Tracking** section of an ad, Meta Ads Manager has a **URL parameters** field and a **Build a URL parameter** option ([Meta Business Help](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/1016122818401732)). It supports dynamic values such as `{{campaign.name}}`, which Meta fills in when the ad is delivered. Meta also notes that parameters in this field override the same parameters in the website URL. The full setup is in [how to track Facebook Ads in GA4](/blog/articles/how-to-track-facebook-ads).

### 6\. Microsoft Advertising auto-tagging

Microsoft Advertising can add UTM tags itself. Under **Account level options**, the setting **Add UTM tags to my destination URLs** appends `utm_source`, `utm_medium`, `utm_campaign`, `utm_content` and `utm_term` when an ad is shown ([Microsoft Advertising Help](https://help.ads.microsoft.com/#apex/ads/en/56762/2)). The values per ad format are listed in [Microsoft Ads in GA4](/blog/articles/bing-ads-google-analytics).

### 7\. Google Ads Final URL suffix

Google Ads usually needs no UTM tags: with auto-tagging, Google Analytics reads campaign data from the linked account. When another tool, such as a CRM form, needs UTM values, put them once in the **Final URL suffix** at account, campaign or ad group level, using ValueTrack parameters that Google Ads fills in at click time, such as `{campaignid}` and `{keyword}` ([Google Ads Help](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/6305348)).

## When a free builder is not enough

Free builders fix syntax and leave naming to each person. That breaks in a team: one person writes `paid_social`, another `cpc`, a third `Paid-Social`, and the campaign report splits into three rows.

Two ways teams solve it:

* **A shared spreadsheet with dropdowns** for source and medium, and a column recording who created each link. The OWOX UTM Builder above is one starting point.
* **A governance tool.** [Terminus](https://www.terminusapp.com/) now describes itself as “UTM governance for teams that outgrew their spreadsheet”, with approval workflows and picklists on its higher plans. It is paid, with a trial.

## After the links: where the data goes

Tagged links put the source, medium and campaign into Google Analytics 4. You will find them under Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition, by switching the first column to Session source / medium or Session campaign.

To see what each campaign cost and what it brought back, spend from the ad platforms has to be matched to those sessions, and the match is made on the values your builder produced. GA4 can import campaign costs, as described in [GA4 cost data import](/blog/articles/cost-data-import). For ad set and creative level reporting, teams join spend and GA4’s BigQuery export in a warehouse instead: [OWOX Data Marts](https://www.owox.com/app-signup) loads ad platform data next to the export, and an analyst publishes the joining SQL as a Data Mart that marketers read in Google Sheets. Either way, the join only works if the UTM values are consistent, which is the real job of the builder you choose.

## FAQ

## Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of using free UTM builders for marketing campaign tracking?

Free UTM builders offer marketers several benefits for campaign tracking. They provide precise insights into the performance of various marketing channels, allowing for data-driven decision-making. By tracking parameters like source, medium, and campaign name, businesses can accurately measure ROI and optimize future strategies. Additionally, UTM links simplify the process of attributing conversions to specific campaigns, enabling more efficient resource allocation and maximizing marketing effectiveness.

How do I use a free UTM builder for campaign tracking?

Enter the page URL, then the source, medium and campaign name, and the builder returns the URL with the UTM parameters attached. Use that URL in the ad, email or post, and keep a record of every tagged link and its values so the naming stays consistent.

What are UTM builders, and how are they used in marketing?

UTM builders are tools used in marketing to create custom URLs with UTM parameters, enabling precise tracking of campaign performance. These parameters, such as source, medium, and campaign name, help marketers identify which marketing efforts are driving traffic and conversions. By analyzing this data in platforms like Google Analytics, businesses can make informed decisions to optimize their marketing strategies and allocate resources effectively.

What is the difference between the UTM source and the UTM campaign?

UTM source identifies the origin of the traffic, such as a search engine (Google) or social media platform (Facebook). It helps marketers understand where their audience is coming from. On the other hand, UTM campaign is used to specify the particular marketing campaign or promotion that is driving traffic, such as a seasonal sale or a specific advertising campaign, allowing for detailed tracking of campaign performance.

How do I track my UTM campaign?

To track your UTM campaign, create URLs with UTM parameters using a URL builder tool. Then, share these URLs in your marketing channels. Monitor the performance of these links in your web analytics tool, like Google Analytics, under the Acquisition section. This allows you to see how users interact with your campaign links in real time, providing insights into traffic sources, behavior, and conversions attributed to your campaign.

What is UTM tracking in marketing?

UTM tracking in marketing involves using Urchin Tracking Module parameters added to URLs to measure the effectiveness of online marketing campaigns across different sources and mediums. By analyzing UTM data in analytics platforms, marketers can understand where traffic comes from, how it behaves on their site, and which campaigns drive conversions, helping to optimize marketing strategies for better ROI.

How can I effectively analyze UTM data from my campaigns?

You can analyze UTM data effectively by using analytics tools like Google Analytics to monitor key metrics such as traffic sources, conversion rates, and engagement levels associated with different UTM parameters.

Why should you use UTM builders for your marketing campaigns?

UTM builders allow you to create unique tracking codes for your marketing campaigns, providing valuable insights about traffic sources and campaign performance and enabling data-driven decision-making.

How do I create a UTM URL?

To create a UTM URL, use a UTM builder tool. Enter your base URL and set values for source, medium, and campaign parameters. The tool will generate a UTM-tagged URL for your campaign.
