# What is the FORMAT\_DATE function in SQL?

The FORMAT\_DATE function in SQL converts a date value into a formatted string using a specified pattern. Analysts use FORMAT\_DATE to display dates in readable or localized formats, standardize date outputs in reports, and prepare date dimensions for dashboards without changing the underlying stored date values.

The FORMAT\_DATE function in SQL turns a date into a text string based on a pattern, so analysts can present dates in a clean, readable format for reports and dashboards without changing the original date value stored in the database.

## What is the FORMAT\_DATE function in SQL?

FORMAT\_DATE is a date formatting function used when you want a date to look a specific way in query results. Instead of returning a raw date like 2025-03-15, it can return something like 15 Mar 2025, March 2025, or 2025/03/15 depending on the pattern you define.

This matters a lot in analytics. Raw dates are great for joins, filters, and calculations, but formatted dates are better for presentation. Analysts often need both at the same time: one field for logic and another for display. FORMAT\_DATE solves that fast.

It is especially useful in reporting workflows where consistency is everything. If one dashboard shows dates as MM/DD/YYYY and another uses YYYY-MM-DD, confusion appears instantly. FORMAT\_DATE helps create a standard visual layer while keeping the underlying data model intact.

## FORMAT\_DATE syntax and parameters

The function is simple, but the result depends entirely on the pattern you pass in. That makes it powerful and a little dangerous if your team does not align on formatting rules.

### General syntax

The general idea looks like this: FORMAT\_DATE(format\_string, date\_expression).

The first parameter is the pattern that defines how the output should look. The second parameter is the date value you want to convert into a string. The output is text, not a date data type, which is important when that result is later used in filters, joins, or grouping.

Analysts often use this in SELECT statements, calculated reporting fields, and transformation logic. It can also appear in automated SQL workflows, including [using SQL functions inside stored procedures](/blog/articles/stored-procedures-sql-benefits-examples-use-cases) when date labels need to be generated consistently across recurring jobs.

### Common format pattern examples

Different SQL environments support different pattern tokens, but the goal stays the same: map a date to a readable structure. Common outputs include:

*   2025-03-15 for machine-friendly reporting
*   03/15/2025 for business-facing exports
*   15 Mar 2025 for readable dashboards
* March 2025 for monthly summaries
* Sat, Mar 15 for compact labels

Typical pattern elements represent year, month, day, abbreviated month names, full month names, or weekday names. Before standardizing a format, check how your SQL engine defines pattern symbols. Small token differences can completely change the output.

A good rule: use numeric formats for consistency and text month formats only when readability is the priority.

## Practical use cases for FORMAT\_DATE in analytics

FORMAT\_DATE shines when the analytical model is technically correct but the presentation layer still needs polish. That is the sweet spot where data becomes easier to trust and easier to use.

### Standardizing date formats in reports

Reporting teams often pull data from multiple sources, and those sources rarely agree on date display conventions. One table may store dates cleanly, another may surface them through a transformation, and a reporting tool may apply its own default formatting on top.

Using FORMAT\_DATE in the query layer creates a single standard for output. This is useful for scheduled exports, executive reports, and shared datasets where everyone should see the same date style. It reduces visual noise and lowers the chance that users misread month-day order.

### Preparing date dimensions for dashboards

Dashboards need dates in more than one form. You may need a true date for sorting and filtering, a short label for chart axes, and a monthly label for grouped views. FORMAT\_DATE helps create those display-ready fields directly in the reporting layer.

For example, a date dimension can include a raw calendar\_date field plus formatted values like month\_label or day\_name. That structure becomes much stronger when paired with [key constraints and clean date dimensions](/blog/articles/key-constraints-sql), because consistency in both structure and display keeps reporting stable.

The key move is to keep formatted fields secondary. Use them for labels, not as the only representation of time.

### Improving readability for non-technical stakeholders

Analysts may be comfortable reading ISO dates, but many stakeholders are not. A campaign manager reviewing weekly results usually wants something instantly clear, not something technically precise but visually cold.

FORMAT\_DATE makes outputs more human. A label like “Mar 2025” is easier to scan in a dashboard than “2025-03-01.” The same goes for board slides, CSV extracts, and presentations where date strings act more like labels than actual data fields.

This is where tiny formatting changes can create a big usability win. Better readability means fewer questions, faster interpretation, and less manual cleanup outside SQL.

## FORMAT\_DATE vs other date formatting functions

Not every date-related function is built for presentation. Some functions convert data types, others format timestamps, and others strip or extract date parts. FORMAT\_DATE has a very specific mission: create a formatted string from a date.

### FORMAT\_DATE vs CAST/CONVERT

CAST and CONVERT are often used to change a value from one data type to another. They may sometimes affect appearance, but formatting is not always their main purpose. FORMAT\_DATE is more explicit: it is designed to control how the date is displayed.

That distinction matters. If you use CAST just to get text output, you may end up with a default format that is inconsistent or hard to read. FORMAT\_DATE gives you intentional formatting logic instead of accepting whatever the engine returns by default.

This is also useful when working with privacy-aware reporting models. In some cases, teams need controlled display rules while applying [data masking and handling sensitive date fields](/blog/articles/data-masking-explained). The goal is different, but the lesson is similar: be deliberate about what users see.

### FORMAT\_DATE vs DATETIME/TIMESTAMP formatting

FORMAT\_DATE works with date values, not full datetime or timestamp values. If your field includes hours, minutes, seconds, or timezone data, you typically need a function built for those types instead.

That difference is important in event-level analytics. Session start times, click timestamps, and transaction times often require datetime formatting, not date formatting. If you only care about the calendar day, you may first convert the timestamp to a date and then apply FORMAT\_DATE.

In short, use FORMAT\_DATE when the time component is irrelevant and the output should represent just the date in a readable format.

## Example: Using FORMAT\_DATE in a marketing performance query

Imagine a marketing analyst building a daily campaign report from ad performance data. The team wants the raw date for sorting and aggregation, but they also want a dashboard-friendly label for charts and exports.

A query might look like this:

```
SELECT
  campaign_name,
  date AS report_date,
  FORMAT_DATE('%b %d, %Y', date) AS report_date_label,
  SUM(clicks) AS clicks,
  SUM(cost) AS cost,
  SUM(conversions) AS conversions
FROM
  campaign_performance
GROUP BY
  campaign_name,
  report_date,
  report_date_label
ORDER BY
  report_date;
```

Here, report\_date stays as the true date field. That is the field you want for ordering and filtering. report\_date\_label is the formatted string shown to users, such as “Mar 15, 2025.”

This separation is clean and powerful. You preserve analytical accuracy while making the output easier to read. It also helps when you [generate and refactor SQL date formatting queries](/blog/articles/how-to-build-sql-queries-with-chatgpt) and want a repeatable structure for reporting logic.

The big takeaway: do not replace the raw date with the formatted string unless you truly need text. Keep both when possible.

## How FORMAT\_DATE fits into Data Mart–centric analytics

In a data mart setup, presentation-ready fields often sit close to reporting consumption. That makes FORMAT\_DATE a practical tool for shaping outputs without rewriting the source model.

### OWOX Data Marts context: using formatted dates in reporting layers

Data marts usually separate storage logic from reporting logic. Raw dates belong in the core model because they are reliable for joins, partitions, aggregations, and time-based analysis. Formatted dates belong in the reporting layer, where readability matters most.

That approach keeps the model flexible. Analysts can join on proper date keys, preserve sort order, and still expose user-friendly labels for dashboards. It becomes even more useful when the date dimension is structured with [primary and foreign keys in your date dimension](/blog/articles/primary-and-foreign-keys-sql), because formatted labels then sit on top of a strong relational foundation.

In other words, FORMAT\_DATE is not just cosmetic. In a data mart workflow, it helps bridge technical structure and business usability. That is exactly where good analytics gets exciting: the data stays clean, and the output becomes instantly understandable.
