Item revenue

Item Revenue tells you how much revenue each product or SKU generates. Understand what it is, how to calculate it, why it matters, and how to use it to grow your business.

Formula

Item Revenue = Units Sold × Price per Unit

Example. If you sell 100 units of Product A at $50 each, your Item Revenue for that product is 100 × 50 = $5,000.

Overview

What it is

Item Revenue is the total income generated from the sale of a specific product or SKU. It helps businesses track performance at the product level to inform inventory, pricing, and marketing strategies.

Why it matters

Item Revenue provides visibility into which products drive the most revenue. It supports better decision-making around product promotions, stock management, and ROI per item.

How it is calculated

Multiply the number of units sold by the price per unit. For multiple SKUs, calculate separately for each item.

Good and bad values

A good value

Good Item Revenue aligns with high sales volume and solid profit margins, indicating a strong-performing product.

A bad value

Low Item Revenue may signal poor product-market fit, pricing issues, or underperforming marketing – requiring immediate analysis.

Do and avoid

Do

Use these strategies to track and grow revenue at the individual product level.

  1. 01

    Use product-level analytics

Monitor performance by SKU to spot revenue trends and adjust strategies quickly.

  2. 02

    Promote high-margin items

Focus campaigns on items that generate strong revenue with lower costs.

  3. 03

Adjust pricing based on sales trends

Use pricing strategies to maximize revenue without losing demand.

Avoid

  1. Failing to separate revenue by product or relying only on total revenue can mask low-performing items that drag down profitability.

“Golden data is clean data — the measure of reality, true and not false, that you can trust based on its source. If you have that, you're good.”

“Most businesses look at a Shopify or Google Analytics dashboard and think it's the source of truth. It's not — that data was never cleaned.”
