Ad frequency
Ad Frequency shows how often your ad is shown to the same person. Here’s everything you need to know: what it is, why it matters, how to calculate it, and how to optimize it!
Formula
Example. If your campaign delivered 30,000 impressions to 10,000 unique users, your Ad Frequency would be 3. This means each person saw your ad an average of three times.
What it is
Ad Frequency refers to the average number of times a single user is exposed to a specific ad over a given period. It helps advertisers understand how often their audience is seeing their message.
Why it matters
Ad Frequency is critical for balancing visibility and ad fatigue. While repeated exposure can boost awareness, too much repetition may annoy users and reduce campaign performance.
How it is calculated
Divide the total number of ad impressions by the total number of unique users (or reach). This tells you how many times, on average, each person saw your ad.
A good value
A good Ad Frequency typically ranges from 1 to 3 per week. This level often delivers message recall without causing ad fatigue – though it depends on your audience and campaign type.
A bad value
An excessively high Ad Frequency – like 7+ exposures – can lead to ad fatigue, lower click-through rates, and wasted budget. It’s often a sign your audience pool is too small or the creative is stale
Do
Use these strategies to maintain optimal Ad Frequency and improve campaign efficiency.
- 01
Set frequency caps
Limit how many times an individual sees your ad to avoid overexposure and keep engagement high.
- 02
Refresh your creatives
Swap in new visuals, messages, or formats regularly to keep repeated impressions fresh and effective.
- 03
Expand audience targeting
If frequency is too high, broaden your targeting to reach new users and reduce repetitive exposure.
Avoid
Don’t let ads run indefinitely without checking frequency. High frequency without creative rotation or targeting adjustments can lower performance and brand perception.

Real things real customers said — each quote pinned to a specific claim, straight from the quotes database.
“We had six or seven different channels and no single source of truth — it was almost impossible, a lot of guesswork.”
“Golden data is clean data — the measure of reality, true and not false, that you can trust based on its source. If you have that, you're good.”
“Most businesses look at a Shopify or Google Analytics dashboard and think it's the source of truth. It's not — that data was never cleaned.”
